Labour Day (March)

Labour Day in March is a regional public holiday in Victoria and Tasmania that honours the historic achievements of the Australian labour movement. Celebrated on the second Monday of March, it marks the successful 19th-century campaign by trade unions for a balanced eight-hour workday.

The origins of the March Labour Day trace back to 21 April 1856, when stonemasons working on the University of Melbourne construction site downed tools and marched to Parliament House. Led by figures such as James Stephens, the workers demanded an eight-hour working day without a reduction in pay. Employers agreed, establishing one of the earliest peaceful victories for short-hours working conditions anywhere in the world.

This triumph inspired trade unionists across the country to adopt the principle of 'Eight Hours Labour, Eight Hours Recreation, Eight Hours Rest'. While other Australian states eventually chose different dates to mark the occasion, Victoria maintained its early March holiday. In Tasmania, the second Monday in March was officially designated as Eight Hours Day to commemorate the same industrial milestone.

In Victoria, the Labour Day long weekend coincides with Melbourne's popular Moomba Festival along the Yarra River, featuring parades, water sports, and family carnivals. Across both Victoria and Tasmania, people take advantage of the early-autumn long weekend for camping trips, coastal getaways, and community events, while union organisations periodically host commemorative marches and gatherings.
