About Adelaide Cup Day

Adelaide Cup Day is a public holiday in South Australia held on the second Monday of March to mark the state's premier horse racing event. While racing enthusiasts gather at Morphettville Racecourse, many South Australians take advantage of the long weekend to relax with family or enjoy outdoor activities.

History

The inaugural Adelaide Cup was run in 1864 at the Thebarton Racecourse, with a horse named Falcon taking out the first title. The event later moved to its permanent home at Morphettville Racecourse and quickly established itself as a major sporting and social fixture on the South Australian calendar, contested over a distance of 3,200 metres.

For many years, the race was traditionally held in May. In 2006, the state government moved the event and its associated public holiday to the second Monday in March to take advantage of warmer autumn weather and prevent clashes with late-autumn sporting events.

Traditions & Celebrations

Atmosphere on the day centres around Morphettville Racecourse, where crowds dress up in autumn race wear to enjoy trackside hospitality, fashions on the field, and live entertainment. Away from the racecourse, South Australians traditionally use the public holiday for short getaways to regions like the Barossa Valley or Fleurieu Peninsula, local barbecues, and family picnics.
